Where The Wildings Are!
WTWA is a program based in Permaculture and promotes the
idea of gardening with nature and follows patterns in nature to
reduce your garden’s impact on the environment. The
Permaculture Association describes Permaculture as
“an approach to land management and settlement
design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing
natural ecosystems.”
The program aims to increase outdoor learning, create effective
food growing spaces and increase natural areas and biodiversity within the school grounds.
WTWA is broken down into the 12 permaculture principles. All the activities are designed around the Children in Permaculture hands, heart and head approach and whenever possible are child-led.
This program is run in collaboration with LESS (Lancaster District) CIC and on behalf of the Food Futures Network. Rewilding Roots are kindly funded by The Areti Charitable Trust.

The Potato Fairy Competition
Every March, something magical happens… the Potato Fairy visits schools across the region, delivering two seed potatoes to every class that wants to take part in the annual Potato Fairy Competition!
This year, 27 schools are joining the fun, and we’re thrilled to welcome some new schools to the competition! These newcomers will receive a special starter pack, including potato grow bags, compost, and interactive sessions on how to grow their own spuds.
There are three exciting categories to compete in:

🥔 The Heaviest Crop from just two seed potatoes

🧺 The Greatest Number of Potatoes grown from two seeds
The results will be revealed at the joyful and eco-friendly Children’s Green Fair, where we’ll celebrate all the budding gardeners and their amazing potato-growing achievements!
Prizes for winners are solar wildlife motion cameras.
This is only possible with the support of LDCVS and Lancaster City Council.

Wilderness Schools
At Wilderness Schools, we believe in the power of nature to inspire, calm, and connect us. For many children and young people, regular access to the countryside isn’t always possible—so we’re bringing the wonders of the natural world directly into school grounds.
By creating opportunities to explore nature in a familiar and safe environment, we help students build a meaningful connection to the outdoors. This connection acts as a bridge to the wider countryside beyond our urban spaces, nurturing a lifelong relationship with the natural world.
When children engage with nature from a young age, it fosters empathy, understanding, and emotional well-being. Nature becomes a place of calm, curiosity, and memory-making—a space where young minds can thrive.
But Wilderness Schools is about more than just spending time outside. Our goal is to actively engage students with nature, weaving it into their learning in ways that are both enriching and impactful. This is where the real benefits to mental well-being and nature connectedness begin to grow.
Our programme is built around a core set of activities inspired by the Five Pathways to Nature Connectedness, a research-based framework developed by the University of Derby. These pathways guide children in deepening their relationship with nature through senses, emotion, beauty, meaning, and compassion. We also offer flexible activities that can be tailored to suit your school’s unique needs and curriculum.

Garden Centre Enterprise Project
The Garden Centre Enterprise Project is kindly funded by the Banks Lyon Memorial Trust. We are working with students at Morecambe Road School to make use of their amazing polytunnel and allotment space to set up and run a garden centre to sell the plants and produce they grow as part of their Level 1 in Horticulture. This will give them real life experience of setting up and running a business whilst learning essential growing and plant care skills. They have called their enterprise Morecambe Greenery.
